Microsoft today released the 14.3.4 update for Office for Mac 2011, adding Office 365 compatibility in addition to a host of bug fixes. Previously, Office for Mac 2011 users had to uninstall Office for Mac and sign up for Office 365. Now, existing Office for Mac 2011 users can easily integrate their software with the subscription service. The rest of the update addresses various bugs, including an issue where file names would change when saved to SkyDrive or SharePoint in Microsoft Word for Mac. The font Calibri Light was also added, fixing poor rendering of Office 2013 shared documents that used the font.Other bug fixes include being able to coauthor a PowerPoint Web App session without being alerted to potential conflicts, an expiring token notification, and an issue where keyboard and mice commands would 'lose control' during a PowerPoint for Mac slideshow. A full list of bug fixes can be found on the Microsoft Support site. While Office 2011 for Mac is still being updated, a new version of Office for Mac may arrive in April 2014. This update to Office 2011 for Mac, which requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later, is available for free via Microsoft AutoUpdate or Microsoft's website.

Samsung's latest ad has made its way online (via CNET), once again poking fun at Apple's iPhone in order to promote its new flagship phone, the Galaxy S4. The 93-second ad takes place at a summer pool party and has Galaxy S4 users showing off select features of their phone, like the ability to control a TV, air gestures, the camera and S Beam, which allows users to transfer content between phones by bumping them together.Like last year's Samsung ad, which poked fun at the iPhone 5 launch, Samsung portrays the iPhone as uncool by having older, parent-like figures using the iPhone 5. German auction house Breker (via ComputerWorld) is set to put a working Apple 1 on auction later this month and it may fetch between $240,000 and $400,000. Developer Flying Meat has released an update to its popular Photoshop alternative Acorn, bringing it to version 4.0 and adding an improved user interface, speed upgrades, non-destructive filters, multiple layer selection and more. The developer claims that the new version of Acorn is 'a lot faster than its predecessors' in a variety of ways, including applying filters and selections and working with large images. New features like non-destructive filters also improve workflow speed, allowing users to try filter combinations without overwriting the original image data.Non-Destructive FiltersLayer styles and filters are now merged together into a happy new UI. Chain filters together to create endless combinations of unique effects knowing you can always change your mind later on.Non-destructive filters aren't the only new part of Acorn, as the entire program has received a 'new coat of paint' while the tools palette has been split off into its own window and a new filter HUD, called Merlin HUD, has been added, which will allow users to manipulate the radii and center points of their filters on the canvas.Acorn 4, which debuted in 2007 with the goal of 'simplicity', is available on Flying Meat's website for $29.99 until the end of. As a part of The Huffington Post's 'iTheft' series of articles detailing the black market for stolen iPhones, the website has posted a new feature that takes an inside look at how the San Francisco Police Department handles its stolen iPhone sting operations. The man in the hoodie is indeed a policeman: Officer Tom Lee is playing the role of decoy in a sting operation targeting buyers of stolen iPhones.

Beneath his sweatshirt, he wears a small recording device taped to his chest. Lee approaches a heavy-set man standing outside the red awning of a Carl's Jr. Burger restaurant. The man wears glasses and a black pinstripe suit. He inspects the iPhone and offers $100.

Lee takes the cash, hands over the phone and gives the signal. Four officers swoop in and place the man in handcuffs, notching another arrest in the intensifying cat-and-mouse game playing out here and in other major American cities between law enforcement and criminals looking to profit from the burgeoning trade in stolen mobile devices. The sting operation was one of many set up to try to poison the iPhone black market in San Francisco with 'fear and distrust' so that would-be buyers and sellers would be wary of engaging in any illegal transactions. To facilitate the arrests, the SFPD solicited help from Apple. The company loaned a number of iPhones to the department, which plain clothes officers 'sold' while undercover. Officer Lee himself is an Apple 'expert,' having been employed at an Apple retail store before joining the SFPD.As noted by The Huffington Post, the program has a number of critics. Apple today announced on its developer news website that it will be 'hitting the road' with individual Tech Talk sessions for developers this fall (via The Next Web). The news comes a day after tickets for the company's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) sold out in two minutes.Enthusiasm for WWDC 2013 has been incredible, with tickets selling out in record time.

For those who can’t join us in San Francisco, you can still take advantage of great WWDC content, as we’ll be posting videos of all our sessions during the conference. We’ll also be hitting the road this fall with Tech Talks in a city near you. Hope to see you there. With the quick sellout, even some developers who thought they were purchasing their tickets in time experienced difficulties with the checkout process, and Apple contacted some of those affected developers yesterday to offer them a second chance at purchasing tickets. The latest release in the popular LEGO video game series from Warner Bros. Entertainment and TT Games, LEGO Batman: DC Super Heroes, has arrived in the iOS App Store. The Mac version of the game, 'LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes', was released last year. Like other iOS versions of LEGO games, the game has many of the same features of the Mac version but includes two iOS control styles in 'Classic' and 'Touch Screen.' This also marks the first time a LEGO game on an iOS device has featured voice acting.

Previously, LEGO games for the platform used pantomiming characters to express story elements. Our sister-site TouchArcade has an overview of the gameplay:You'll run around doing 3D platforming and light puzzle solving, all the while beating up on both bad guys and objects and then collecting the sweet, sweet Lego studs that are left behind, which are then used to buy different characters and other goodies. Lego Batman: DC Super Heroesboasts an 80 character roster, and not surprisingly it looks like you can buy studs as IAP if you desire. LEGO Batman: DC Super Heroes is a universal app available in the App Store for $4.99.

The reviews for the Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung's next flagship Android smartphone, are out. The company announced the device at an event in mid-March and boasts a 5' screen, a 1080p display that Samsung calls 'Full HD Super AMOLED' and more. The overall consensus is that the Galaxy S4 is a solid upgrade over the previous S3 but that its plastic casing and minimal upgrades keep it from being great.Image via EngadgetHere is a collection of some of the early reviews:AllThingsD- 'I found Samsung’s software often gimmicky, duplicative of standard Android apps, or, in some cases, only intermittently functional.' - 'Its screen and camera resolution beat the iPhone 5’s and I found its pictures to be slightly better than those from the Apple phone, which is nearly a year old.' - 'Still, compared with the iPhone 5, with its 4-inch screen, the S 4 is 30 percent larger and 17 percent heavier.' Gizmodo- 'It retains the same rounded-rectangle look, with metal edges and a slippery, finger-print-trapping plastic back that looks like it belongs on a far more downmarket phone.' - 'Battery performance on the S4 is among the best we've seen from smartphones this year, though it's still not anywhere near as everlasting as the RAZR MAXX HD.'

- 'Sound on the S4 is another problem. It still has just one tiny, tin-can-sounding speaker on the bottom back of the phone.'

Engadget- Smart Scroll, which tracks the movement of your head to scroll through pages, is a 'great idea' in theory but is 'frustrating for several reasons' including limited compatibility with apps. The first responders to the iPhone 4 antenna class action lawsuit are receiving their $15 settlement checks, reports to 9to5Mac. Image via 9to5MacThe settlement, which came about in February 2012, is limited to people who experienced antenna issues with their iPhone 4 but were unable to return their device and opted not to receive a free bumper case from Apple.Apple will provide a $15 cash payment to Class Members who send in a valid claim form. The claim form will require you to declare that you: (a) experienced antenna or reception issues with your iPhone 4; (b) were unable to return your iPhone 4 without incurring any costs; (c) were unwilling to use a case or free bumper for your iPhone 4; and (d) completed certain troubleshooting steps or are unable to complete the troubleshooting steps because you no longer own your iPhone 4.The first checks were issued on April 17, 2013 and are void after July 16. After being delayed yesterday, Funny Or Die's Steve Jobs movie 'iSteve' has now been released online. The movie stars Justin Long as Steve Jobs and Lost's Jorge Garcia as Steve Wozniak. The film is the longest video produced by the humor site and runs nearly 80 minutes long.

The script for the film was written in three days and filmed in five. The filmmakers have joked that the film may not be the best Steve Jobs movie, but that it would be the first.

A Jobs film called 'Jobs', starring Ashton Kutcher, is set to debut this year while Sony Pictures is making an Aaron Sorkin-written film based on the biography by Walter. AppleInsider is reporting that Apple has contacted app developers via its iTunes Connect program to ask them to localize their apps in multiple languages and to market that their apps and books are localized. In the letter to iTunes Connect members, Apple noted that the App Store and Mac App Store are available in 155 countries with support for 40 languages, saying that 'it has never been more important to localize your app and marketing material.'

Apple also rolled out a Chinese Support Communities forum, which would give speakers of various Chinese languages the opportunity to help out fellow Apple users in their native tongues. The move signals how important China has grown to Apple in the past year, as during a quarterly results call in January Apple revealed that revenues in China were up 67 percent. IPhone saw its most significant growth come in the country as well, up more than 100 percent year-over-year.Apple has recently had to deal with controversy in China over criticism about its iPhone warranty policies in the country.

In response, Apple CEO Tim Cook issued an open letter and Apple Senior VP of Operations Jeff Williams traveled to China to deal with the public relations. The Verge is reporting that Apple is set to strike a licensing deal with Universal Music Group, the largest music label, by next week for its rumored Internet radio service. A deal with Warner Music would follow soon after that, according to The Verge.Last week, it was reported that Apple was close to wrapping a deal up with Universal Music Group and Warner Music, but no immediate time table was given and it was unclear if any side made concessions on royalty rates. In early March the New York Post said that one of the sticking points in the negotiations with the labels was that Apple was offering to pay half the royalty rate of Pandora, which was $0.06 per 100 songs streamed. The Verge says that Apple did not succeed in trying to undercut Pandora's rates. Now, Apple will pay rates nearly 'neck and neck' with Pandora, one of the sources said.

Because of iTunes huge number of users, the new service is expected to be an immediate threat to Pandora. The Pandora-like service is supposed to launch later this year and is set up to help iTunes users discover new music, generate ad sales and boost sales of downloads, according to The Verge. However, Apple still has to strike a deal with Sony Music Entertainment and music publishers, and talks with those companies are said to not be as far along as Universal Music Group and Warner Music. If Apple is able to agree to a deal with Sony in the next couple months, it could possibly debut iRadio at Worldwide Developers Conference this. Fierce Wireless reports that while discussing Verizon's LTE investment at the National Association of Broadcasters conference yesterday, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam claimed that he convinced Steve Jobs to add LTE to the iPhone.' I was really trying to sell him and he sat there without any reaction. Finally, he said, 'Enough. You had me at 10 Mbps.

I know you can stream video at 10 Mbps.' And Apple's next phone was LTE,' McAdam said.McAdam did not indicate the timing of his conversation with Jobs or whether he was CEO at the time, but he was appointed Verizon CEO in August 2011. The next iPhone released was the iPhone 4S, which did not include LTE.In April 2011, Tim Cook had said that LTE chipsets at that point in time forced Apple to make design compromises the company wasn't willing to make. Panic, the developers behind several popular apps such as Coda and Transmit, have released a new productivity app that allows users to easily view a variety of data relevant to their lives in a single screen. The app, called Status Board, was accidentally released in December but was quickly pulled.

It allows users to use the app's built-in panels to display information like calendar dates, tweets, email, weather, news and more. The first reviews for Facebook Home, the social network's new Android home screen experience, are out. Home isn't quite a 'Facebook Phone', but it also isn't a full-fledged operating system.

It slots right in between the two segments.Dieter Bohn of The Verge details the two main components of Home:Facebook Home essentially consists of two parts. The first is Facebook Home proper (henceforth 'Home'), which replaces your homescreen and your lockscreen with Facebook's News Feed and app launcher. The second is a major update to Facebook Messenger which lets you receive and reply to texts no matter which app you're using.Bohn mentions that the Chat Head feature, which overlays Facebook Messenger chats over any app a user may use, was a highlight. The difference in immediacy and convenience is huge. What Facebook has figured out is that people usually have messaging conversations with somebody for a little while, but are doing other things on their phone while they do it. Being able to reply without losing your sense of place is incredibly convenient.Walt Mossberg of AllThingsDigital thought that the two-pronged set-up was simple to use.I found Facebook Home to be easy to use, elegantly designed and addictive. Although I’m a regular Facebook user, I found that, with Home, I paid more attention than ever to my news feed, Liked items more often and used Facebook’s Messenger service more often. So, if you are a big Facebook fan, Facebook Home can be a big win.Although The Verge says that Home's simplicity also hurts it as it lacks key Android features like Widgets.

Thanks for your response Eric! I read through several discussions before submitting my first-ever question to the Apple Support Communities Board, but I learned nothing new from them that was helpful to me with regards to MerpAD Office365.

I was hoping someone had come up with an answer for this odd behavior, which is not only annoying but also unsettling for someone who has had the types and number of problems like I have had (especially since upgrading to Mountain Lion) with my MacBook Pro. It seems that there are many of us looking forward to a solution to this issue. I’m including a little background information just in case it raises a flag with someone reading this discussion. You never know I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15 inch that I purchased in January 2011, which is also when I installed Microsoft Office: Mac 2011.

In August 2012, I installed Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, due to numerous problems since the upgrade, I am running a Mac computer that is very basic: a virtual skeleton of its former self. My MacBook Pro is not associated with any other network or computer (i.e., stand alone computer), I do not use icloud, I do not share anything with anyone, and out of the all of the applications included in Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 I only use WORD and EXCEL.

I first noticed Office 365 Service on my computer in early February 2013 after 14.3.0 update and then numerous crashes while using WORD and EXCEL. That's a Microsoft service and it is for Office 365 (you can tell) but you said that you don't use O365? Kill the Office 365 process and see what (if anything) changes as a result.

Yes, thats what a poster earlier in this thread said too, what I want to know is whether the Office 365 Service is running, not whether you use it. Look in Activity Monitor, and read this earlier post if you want to know why.
