I placed a few common goldfish in my pond about a month ago. The first week or so all went well, the fish would come to greet me whenever I walked. Then, one day I found 1 goldfish floating & pieces of 2 more fish scattered around.
The only thing different from the previous day was a pair of frogs who had come to the pond to lay eggs. I don't know if frogs eat 1' - 1 1/2' goldfish but that was the only difference. Also, the remaining fish seemed scared & huddled within some underwater plants near the center of the pond. After that the frogs moved on & gradually the fish became less scared & started exploring the whole pond again. Then, yesterday, I went to the pond & saw a fish floating, & again the rest of the fish are huddled in the center of the pond. This time I was able to get the fish body to shore & saw that there was a triangular bite mark on the fish, just behind the gills on the bottom of the fish.
It was definitely not nibbling by his fish friends. This was a little bigger than a 1/4 wide at the widest & it had sharp edges like it was one bite.
Now, I'm wondering what this could be? There aren't any frogs in the pond now as they only come to lay eggs & then leave. Maybe it could be a small snapping turtle? I don't see a turtle anywhere but maybe they just come out at night? I live in the northeastern part of US. I don't know how to help the remaining fish.
I don't see how I could possibly catch them even if I had another pond to put them in, which I don't. Any thoughts on what my predator might be would be appreciated! Update: I went back to the pond & poked all around & found 3 more dead goldfish. I was able to recover 2 of the bodies & each had chomp taken out of it.
So, there are only 3 fish left, & I can see them hiding out in their favorite underwater bush. It's too far to reach them & there's too much brush/plants to try to catch them with a long net.

Even if I had high enough boots, as soon as you start walking in there it would get too cloudy to see the fish. The pond is spring fed so the water is crystal clear but there are leaves, bushes, & underwater grasses & such so I guess anything could be hidden in there. Probably can't save my last 3 fish & I certainly won't try stocking it again! There are two main predators of pond goldfish in Northeastern US.
First is the Great Blue Heron. They will pick them off but normally will take the entire body with them and you won't find anything left in the pond.

The other common predator is the raccoon. They are likely to just remove the heads of the fish and to also leave parts of the fish lying around in the pond.

My goldfish in Central NH are occasional victims of raccoons throughout the Summer. My fish quickly learn to stay in the deep central part of the pond to avoid the raccoons, however, so loses don't usually add up to more than one or two fish per season. Both predators can be deterred by suspending deer netting over the pond. Fish food will fall thru the netting but the predators are unable to get to the fish. Some people report success with keeping herons and other birds away by using plastic owls placed around the pond. My pond is near my dogs so I suspect that helps keep the birds away.

The raccoons are not afraid of the dogs at all and will walk thru a dog pen to get to my chickens and kill them OR my fish in the pond.
