See how to refinish your tub the easy way with the Magic Tub & Tile Spray-On Refinishing Kit Find product details here: Special thanks to Three Strands Properties for their help in creating this video Video Transcript: This video will show you how you can turn your peeling, discolored, old tub into a freshly painted, refinished tub. Prepping properly is critical to achieving a beautiful, lasting finish. We'll cover some of the key steps in this video, but please consult the instruction manual for the full details and list of materials. Gather all the materials you'll need before beginning and block out enough time for the project.

Prep starts with removing all hardware and caulk around the tub. Then, scrape away loose paint with a wire brush or scraper and remove mildew if necessary. Next, use an abrasive scrubbing pad and abrasive cleaner to remove any dirt, grime or soap scum. After a thorough cleaning, wipe the area with a lint-free cloth. Next, sand the entire surface of the tub with 400 or 600 grit sandpaper.

Scuffing-up the surface allows the paint to adhere properly. Vacuum the tub after sanding to remove dust. Next, use TSP cleaner to remove any dirt, grime or soap scum.

The surface should be clear of all dust or debris before painting. A tack cloth will help pick up any remaining particles. Don’t rush the prep stages. Prepping properly will greatly improve the performance of the new paint. Before beginning painting, allow the tub to dry and ensure the area is well ventilated by opening windows and using fans. Fans should not blow directly onto the newly applied paint as it can create air bubbles in the finish.

Both cans of paint are the same, so grab one and shake it vigorously enough for the mixing ball to rattle. Continue shaking for an additional minute to ensure it is well mixed. Spray product 10-16 inches from the tub surface with large sweeping motions, slightly overlapping as you go. Apply thin layers to avoid dripping. If drips occur, smooth them with a paintbrush or wipe them with a cloth immediately. After the first coat, allow 30 minutes for it to dry.

Then follow the same steps for the 2nd coat. Once you’re satisfied with the coverage, remove any tape immediately. Allow the tub to dry for at least 72 hours before exposing to water, bathmats, cleaning products or suction cups.

Once completely dry, you have a freshly painted tub that is ready for use. Find product details here.
